Susan Winton was born in Arbroath in 1960 and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in the early eighties. Upon graduation she was awarded a scholarship to The Hospitalfield House, and went on to complete a Post Graduate Diploma.
After living in Angus and then Shetland, she now lives in North East Fife and currently combines her painting with a career as an art lecturer.
She has had very successful exhibitions and her work has received some recognition, most recently being awarded the Richard Demarco prize at the Scottish Painting Competition.
She is aregular exhibitor at the RSA and RSW exhibitions and more recently with the SSA, PAI and RGI. Her work is being shown at numerous galleries in Scotland and England, and also with Richard Demarco and the Demarco Art Collection and Archive.
Her work is an amalgam of media and techniques. she use a combination of painted plaster, photographs, wax and acetate transfers mixing old and new technologies.
Inspired by her roots in North East Scotland, and her ties to The Shetland Islands, her subject matter includes the wild and rugged coastline contrasting with the tamed nature of the countryside. The natural world and how it is affected, by man or the natural elements, has been a very important part of her life and of how to portray it.
