Arie Vardie is both a silversmith and painter. Born in Chile, Arie later moved to Jerusalem, where he graduated with a degree in graphic design. Arie began to experiment in jewellery design and painting while living in a kibbutz on the edge of the Negev desert.
Arie's work is eclectic, spontaneous and always responsive to what is around him. Subject matter focuses largely on the natural world, in particular around his home in Perthshire, The West Coast of Scotland, the Negev desert and Chilean Patagonia, they provide a continuous source of inspiration and a starting point to create expressive work" Nature acts as a metaphor for expression of feeling or sentiments, accentuated by the use of colour in an experimental way"The composition of line, shape and tonal values is a large aspect of the work. A distinctive feature in Arie's work is that in addition to capture the moment, there is a sense that things are about to change. Light is the key to this.Arie likes to experiment with the concept of light moving across the imagery just coming into light or just about to fall into shadow. Texture adds another dimension, a connective glue between the different elements that form the image. Also embedded in some of the work are areas of gold / metal leaf as to enhance the quality of the paint making it brighter and more translucent."In the process of creation I let the materials speak for themselves , and the image to reveal itself, for the viewer....to reach out"Colour and vibrancy are essential to the work and these in turn are inspired by his extensive travels and Mediterranean roots.Arie's fine works are in private and public collections.
Arie says: "I paint because I love the freedom of expression, the experimentation with colour and playing with texture in Acrylics, Mixed Media and Oils. My work is predominantly about the flow in nature which acts as a metaphor for expression of feelings or sentiments. The connective points of sea and shore, big open spaces, skies, the elemental form of the land and the quality of the light. My paintings are about the celebration of life, about harmony and balance. In the process of creation I let the materials speak for themselves and the image to reveal itself. My aim is simple.
