Jan Knibbs is based in Whitchurch, Herefordshire. She is a fashion and textile designer specialising in embroidery. She creates amazing items of wearable art, all adorned with her distinctive signature style of rich hand-worked embroidery, usually inspired by nature with delicate floral designs in appliqué, ribbon, embroidery and beadwork and Swarovski crystals.
Jan often incorporates vintage fabrics, off-cuts and antique lace as well as pieces of vintage costume jewellery into her designs for her label “Something Old…Something New” which means it is also ethical. Each piece is a unique, one-off work of art, which can be worn or equally beautifully mounted and displayed in a frame like a traditional painting.
Her work appeals to fashion aficionados and collectors of fine craftwork and indeed anyone looking for something distinctive to make them stand out from the crowd. Jan often works to commission from her studio, her bespoke fusion of art, design, craft and high fashion has created many personal and unique heirlooms, from bridal wristbands and headpieces or pieces for the home, including panels and wall-hangings. Her work often weaves poetry and precious fabric remnants or an old piece of jewellery belonging to the family commissioning the artwork. Jan’s talent for contemporary embroidery has been recognised by various institutions. In 2001 she won the embroidery category in the British Bridal Awards with one of her wedding dresses and last year she was awarded the Swarovski Prize in the prestigious international embroidery competition organised by Hand and Lock.
