John Cannavan was born in Glasgow in 1950. He studied drawing and painting at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, graduating in 1971. He later gained a BA (Hons) degree in Art History and then qualifyed as an art teacher.
John taught in Scottish schools for 33 years, he now concentrates on painting from his Edinburgh studio full time. His house in Glenlivet provides the inspiration for many of his landscape paintings and his subject matter also includes townscapes, coastlines and wildlife of Scotland. Working mainly in oils and watercolour, John's traditional style is distinctive, lively and colourful, his paintings have continued to be widely exhibited and collected across the UK. We are delighted to welcome John to the gallery with a new series of 'fossil' paintings, that have lead him in a new painterly direction, exploring ideas of abstraction within a figurative context, looking at images of fish and sea scapes.
